I was going through my five year old’s backpack on Monday morning.  I know I should have done it over the weekend but there was no time.  I found his little report card (how cute) and of course on it I found that he needs to be reminded to try things independently.  Hmm, really?  Actually this is his first real school experience.  Prior to that his teacher was Mom and he never had to compete with time.  So I wasn’t really shocked by that.  But the second thing I pulled out was homework…

Did I mention that this was kindergarten…?

On the packet (yes not a sheet but a packet) it states that it is January and now there will be a packet of homework that comes home every Thursday and that will need to be turned in on Thursday.  I’m guessing this week we were shorted a day because it wasn’t in there till Friday.  It isn’t a very long packet but I guess I’m just in shock that there is one.   Of course, I’m the busy mom so now I must find a few more hours to do homework for my five year old.  This was not mentioned in the parent teacher conference.

So you will probably hear my rant about this from time to time.  I think its really overload for the little people who go to school only a hours a day already but I’m “that mom” so I’m probably pretty biased.

I’m thinking I’m going to learn how to say no….again.  I used to be very good at it.  I would look at my old Franklin Planner – yes I still use one.  I use the planner on my Android and my Franklin.  I like to use both.  I’m a little weird that way.  But anywho… I would check my schedule and if it didn’t fit, I would send my regrets.  No can do.  But now I really try to make it work.  I try to make people happy.  I say life is short, why not.  But then at the end of the day I’m exhausted from keeping all of my obligations.

I had an ‘friend’ ask me to pick up her kid from school today.  No big deal you say because I was going there anyway.  Well this ‘friend’ only calls when she needs me to do something.  No I won’t get into the age old mom debate.  But I usually try to help her.  But my kid wasn’t at practice today so there was no reason for me to go there and I had already slotted something else in the timeframe (ie conference call).

So I listened to the frantic call of being stuck on the highway, yadda  yadda.  Yes I understand but a call to see how I’m doing every once in awhile would be nice :)

YES! I picked up her kid.  It’s not the kid’s fault.  Still haven’t learned to say no.

It’s a shame when you have to schedule time in for yourself.  If you are a busy mom I’m sure you know what I mean.  In fact it’s probably the thing that gets skipped in your day.  You get everything else done for everyone and then there is this little task on your agenda to do, maybe its a manicure or in my case yesterday it was a Yoga class.  Yoga is good right.. I’m getting in touch with the Zen side of me.

But my day was filled with laundry, cooking and projects.  And of course homework.  I didn’t want to take the time for me to take this class.  I could erase that hour of time and the half hour of drive time and put something else there.  But I did it, I bit the bullet and took the class.  And I’m kind of glad I did.

This was my first time taking a Yoga class at this new place courtesy of my Groupon coupon :) and the instructor also does Pilates.  You see where I’m going with this.  I thought my wrists were going to fall off and that my shoulders were going to pop out of socket.  And if someone says downward dog one more time, I will go running in the other direction.  I woke up this morning to soreness.  I can’t believe it.  And it’s slowing me down.  Me the busy mom!!!  I can’t take slowness because there is too much to be done.

Wow I’ve never actually had things hurt after Yoga.  Sometimes a stretch might burn a bit the next day but not like this.  I feel like I have lifted weights with my wrists.  Not so good for computer work.  But the good thing is that I did take time for myself and it did feel good to get away for awhile.  It kind of felt like I was running away lol.  I walked right past a bin of dirty clothes on my way out..haha  freedom!!!!

I don’t know about you but I run on about 4 hours of sleep everyday.  That’s about the average.  There are days when it’s less but typically it’s around 4.  I am used to it from my college days when I tried to fit everything into my day and squeezed a little studying in after a party.

Fast forward to today when kids and a small business keep my hopping.  I have the same idea in mind.  Do everything that I want to do in the day and sleep whenever.  Well let me tell you last night I was able to tell a big difference with just a little bit of sleep.

You know how your body decides it is time to sleep.  I had a few more things to do but I fell asleep and didn’t get up until the alarm when off.  Six beautiful hours of sleep and I felt refreshed.  And it has made a huge difference in my day today.  I have been able to check off all the boxes on my business, get to the doctor and pick up the kids from school.  Now it’s time to get dinner ready before another round of work but I don’t feel like I have to reach for the coffee.

Have you had a good productive day like this?  What did you do with it for your business?

If you are like me you are pretty good at planning.  It’s not difficult to do but sometimes things get in the way.  Last week my daughter had oral surgery to remove the remaining baby teeth getting ready for braces.  Yikes!  So me being miss planner cleared the calendar for the morning only.  Hey the appointment was at 10am – 45 minute procedure and then she would be sleeping and I could get work done.

Wrong!

She was in a lot of pain so Momma Bear kicked in and everything else went out the window!  And not only for Friday, but Saturday and most of Sunday.

Wow!

So we play catch up this week.  My daughter still looks like she is storing nuts for winter in those cheeks but the pain is almost gone.  Good news.  Sometimes the best laid plans get thrown up in the air.  But the best part about the whole situation is that as a work from home mom I could be flexible and be there for her.  It would have been a nightmare to try to take time off yadda yadda.

Moms play many roles.  We just get used to doing it.  We are of course very busy in our lives and most of us like it that way.
